Economics 250: Introductory Statistics

Announcements

5. Your purchase of the textbook included an access code for extra online help, via Launchpad. If you are intersted in using those resources, please see the instructions in these Powerpoint Slides. And you can login to Launchpad here.

4. For the continuous uniform distribution you cannot find the variance by hand! Instead, use the formula, which is in the formula sheet or in the one-page add-on on the uniform distribution.

3. Watch out for rounding errors in statistics problems. If you round at an early stage then you may make an error that cumulates through a question. So, remember to retain multiple digits and postpone much rounding until your final answer.

2. Remember that graphs or plots on the exercises must be done in Excel (or some other software), not by hand.

1. When we study statistical distributions a very interesting example is the distribution of income or consumption spending. Here is a short video which illustrates the the evolution of the "fireman's helmet", measured in daily consumption (in real terms) for everyone in the world. If you want to read about policies that promote shifting the helmet, see the Poverty: Not Always With Us from the June 1st 2013 edition of The Economist and an animation of the history and forecasts for the distribution.
