Gotcha!

Rules, Roster, Retcetera

Welcome to the Gotcha page for the QED MA game. Below, you'll find the rules we're playing by, as well as a roster of players.

The Rules

  1. Play is as follows:
    1. Each player will be given a strip of paper by the Gotcha God which has a name of another player and a key phrase on it.
    2. Each player (the Hunter) tries to get their target (the Hunted), which is the name on their piece of paper, to say the key phrase.
    3. If the Hunter gets the Hunted to say the key phrase, the Hunter must say, "Gotcha!" and the elimination must be acknowledged by both parties at the time of the elimination.
    4. Once acknowledged, the Hunted gives the Hunter their sheet of paper with the Hunted's target and key phrase, and the Hunter takes on the Hunted's target as his own.
    5. The Hunter must inform the Gotcha God in person or by email as soon as possible after the elimination.
    6. Play continues until there is one player remaining. This person gets cake.
  2. Players will be assigned targets and key phrases randomly by the Gotcha God.
  3. Bonus phrase: At any time, players may appeal to the Gotcha God to get a bonus phrase assigned to their current target. If the target says either phrase, they are eliminated.
This can only be done once per player, so think wisely. The Gotcha God may give you a much tougher word out of spite.
  4. The plural, gerund, verb, etc. forms of a key phrase will be valid. eg: climbing, climbs, climber, climbed.
Further, homonyms will be allowed. eg: plane and plain.
  5. For an elimination to be valid, all of the following must occur:
    1. Both the Hunter and the Hunted must acknowledge the kill.
    2. The Hunter must have been actively involved in the conversation at the time.
    3. The Hunter may not say the key phrase in order to make the Hunted say it. Note: this includes having a willful accomplice say the phrase for the Hunter. See rule 7.
    4. If the key phrase is uttered with an explicit economic connotation, this will not result in an elimination.
This is done to keep academic interference at a minimum.
    5. The Gotcha God must have been informed of the elimination before it is considered valid.
Note: Chains of eliminations, made before the Gotcha God is aware of the first one in the chain, will be considered valid as long as all eliminations fulfill the other rules.
Whether or not these conditions were fulfilled is the sole discretion of the Gotcha God.
  6. Any and all disputes will be resolved by the Gotcha God.
  7. Don't be a jerk. Playing dirty is okay, but don't violate the spirit of the rules. If you're unsure, consult the Gotcha God.
