Applying to the Graduate Program
Deadline information: The January 15
deadline only applies to the submission of the online
application; we expect supporting documents to follow as soon as
possible(by March 1). We begin evaluating applications as they are completed (after
the deadline), so you should make sure that your application is complete
as soon as possible. We will continue to allow applications to be
submitted until our program is full.

Most students accepted for admission to the M.A. program in economics at Queen's possess an honours bachelor's degree with a major concentration in economics. Most successful applicants will have taken undergraduate courses in statistics and quantitative methods for economics, intermediate and advanced micro- and macroeconomic theory, and two or three further upper-year courses in economics, plus courses in linear algebra and differential and integral calculus.
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must have an honours bachelor's degree and a master's degree in economics.
Minimum average:
The School of Graduate Studies and Research requires at least an upper second class average. Most successful applicants, however, have a strong first class average.
Fall term marks:
If you have not already completed your degree, we will require fall term marks before evaluating your application. Fall term marks may be submitted after the January 15th application deadline.
References:
We require two academic references. If you are applying to the PhD program, both references must be from professors who taught you at the MA level.
Graduate Record Examinations:
Any applicant whose previous degree is not from a Canadian or U.S. university must submit GRE scores.

English as a second language:
Canadian citizens and permanent residents are not required to submit proof of English language proficiency.
If either of the following applies to you, you may not need to provide
proof of English language
proficiency:
1) English is your first language
2) You have recently attended an academic institution for at least one
complete year where
English is the official language of instruction.
If none of these apply, you will be required to submit a passing score on an official test of English as a second language. The acceptable minimum scores are: TOEFL - 600 paper based, 250 computer based, 88 iBT; IELTS - 7; MELAB - 80.
