Course Description:
This course deals with the theory
of international trade. It explores theories that offer explanations for
why countries trade, determinants of the pattern of trade, and an examination
of the normative and positive effects of trade. These theories include the
classical theory of trade the factor-proportions theory of trade, imperfect
competition as a determinant of trade, and other recent theoretical developments.
Using the theories of trade, we also study trade barriers and trade policy,
and trade and economic development.
Course Requirements: The final
grade will be determined on a weighted average of marks on homework assignments
and two exams: a midterm and a final. The weights will be:
Homework: 20%
Midterm Exam: 30%
Final Exam: 50%
While homework assignments will receive
a relatively small weight in determining the final grade, they are still
very important. The homework assignments will provide practice on problems
similar to those will be on the exams. Late homework assignments will
not be accepted.
The midterm
will be held during the class period on Thursday, February 12.
The date, time and place of the final exam will be determined by the university-wide
final exam schedule. If there are exceptional circumstances that
make it impossible for you to take an exam at the scheduled time, please
contact me before the exam. If you have a disability that may prevent
you from fully demonstrating your abilities, please contact me as soon as
possible so we can discuss needed accommodations.
