Nicolas R. Ziebarth and Martin Karlsson, "The Effects of Expanding the Generosity of the Statutory Sickness Insurance System," Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 29, No. 2, 2014, pp. 208-230. The empirical analysis carried out in this paper relies on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP). The SOEP is a representative longitudinal household panel study designed by the SOEP GROUP at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). More details can be found in: Wagner, G. G., J. R. Frick, and J. Schupp (2007). The German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) - evolution, scope and enhancements. Journal of Applied Social Science (Schmollers Jahrbuch) 127 (1), 139-169. or here: http://www.diw.de/en/diw_02.c.221180.en/research_data_center_soep.html The SOEP is a confidential dataset that is governed by strict German data privacy protection laws. Consequently, researchers who are interested in using this dataset are required to formally apply for data access and sign a confidentiality agreement. They also have to pay a small fee before they receive the data DVD and a passcode. Researchers outside the European Union can only obtain the international version of the SOEP, which contains only 95% of the original German version. Inquiries about data access should be adressed to . Further details can be found on the webpage above. The SOEP DVD contains various "generated" variables, mostly on income and education. This is part of the SOEP service. The SOEP team also updates these generated variables annually and retrospectively in order to keep them bug-free. This means that it will be almost impossible to exactly replicate the findings from this study with the most recent version of the SOEP (SOEPv27). The paper and all results rely on SOEPv23. The working datasets for this paper are stored in the SOEP Archive. The SOEP Archive is a new service of the SOEP Group to facilitate re-analysis. Researchers inteersted in replicating the results of this paper are required to contact and apply for data access to the SOEP Archive. However, the standard SOEP access application procedure applies. In order to get access, researchers have to sign a data distribution contract. More details can be found here: http://www.diw.de/de/diw_01.c.340858.de/soep_re_analyses.html The SOEP Data Archive for this article contains the following datasets: JAE_Mainanalysis_clean.dta (survey waves '98 to '00; full-time employed aged 25 to 55) JAE_LaborCostIncrease.dta (survey waves '98 to '00; all employed people) The zip file "zk-files.zip" contains several identically named Stata do-files and log-files. After having customized the paths of the do-files, running them should produce the according log-files. The file also contains variables-zk.txt, which describes all the variables used in the analysis. These are all ASCII files in DOS format, so Unix/Linux users should use "unzip -a".
