Mark B. Stewart, "The Inter-related Dynamics of Unemployment and Low-wage Employment", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 22, No. 3, 2007, pp. 511-531. The data used in the paper are from the first six waves (1991-1996) of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). Researchers may apply for access to BHPS data from the UK Data Archive and will be required to undertake to abide by various rules concerning maintenance of data confidentiality. For more information on the BHPS holdings at the Data Archive, consult: http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/findingData/bhpsTitles.asp. The sample used in the paper was restricted to individuals who were Original Sample Members, were aged between 18 and the state retirement age (65 for men and 60 for women), were not full-time students, and were in the labour force (employed or unemployed) at the time of interview. The unemployment indicator used is constructed on the basis of the ILO/OECD definition of unemployment. Under this definition a person is unemployed if he or she does not have a job, but had looked for work in the past four weeks and is available for work. (BHPS variables used: fjbhas, fjboff, fjbsemp, fjulk1, fjulk4 - see below.) The wage variable is adjusted to April 1997 using the Average Earnings Index. The following BHPS variables were used. In the public release files, variable names are prefixed by a letter indicating the survey wave, e.g. 'a' for wave 1, 'b' for wave 2, etc. Variables listed below with prefix 'f' (and pid) were extracted for all 6 waves used (i.e. 'a'-'f'). pid Cross-wave person identifier fhid Household identification number fjbhas Did paid work last week fjboff No work last week, but has job fjbsemp Employment status fjulk1 Looked for work in last 7 days fjulk4 Looked for work in last 4 weeks fpaygu Usual gross pay per month in current job fjbhrs Number of hours normally worked per week fjbotpd Number of hours worked as paid overtime fscend School leaving age ffeend Further education leaving age fage Age at Date of Interview fmastat Marital status fsex Sex of respondent fhlltw Health limits type or amount of work fregion Region / Metropolitan Area fustock Unemployment in individual's TTWA fvstock Job vacancies in individual's TTWA apaseg Father's socio economic group when respondent aged 14 apaju Father not working when respondent aged 14 amaseg Mother's socio economic group when respondent aged 14 amaju Mother not working when respondent aged 14 bleshst Employment status in first labour market spell after leaving full-time education cljseg Socio economic group of first job held (after leaving full-time education) cljterm Perm. or temp. contract in first job cljylft Redundancy reason for leaving first job Mark Stewart Mark.Stewart [AT] warwick.ac.uk
