Smith, Loren K., "Dynamics and Equilibrium in a Structural Model of Wide- Body Commercial Aircraft Markets", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 27, No. 1, 2012, 1-33. The aircraft location and characteristics data were purchased from Back Aviation Solutions. Back Aviation Solutions does not permit open access to these data. Therefore, these data cannot be posted here. The author signed non-disclosure agreement with Back for use of the data. Authors seeking these or similar data should direct their inquiries to Back Aviation Solutions ( http://www.oagaviation.com ) The price data were obtained from Professor Todd Pulvino (Northwestern University). Authors seeking these data may do so from Professor Pulvino, or with Professor Pulvino's permission, the author. The data used in this paper are limited to wide-bodied aircraft in use during the period from 1978 through 1997. To construct the aircraft ownership dataset the author obtained software from Back Aviation Solutions that allowed him to download variables of interest. After their download, these data required significant processing. Those interested in obtaining these data from Back are welcome to contact the author for additional information regarding data processing. The specific aircraft and aircraft owner are identified in the dataset by variables "id" and "operator," respectively. Variables "model" and "type" allow the author to delineate aircraft and airlines, respectively, into author-defined categories. The dataset also contains the date of each aircraft's entry into service, which allows the author to define the variable "age," which captures each aircraft's age in years. Several snapshots of each aircraft are documented by the dataset. Most importantly for this paper, the date and all of the variables in the dataset are updated each time each aircraft changes operators. Time periods in the paper were defined to be one year long. In cases were there were multiple owners of a single aircraft in a given year, the airline that owned the aircraft the longest was treated as the owner. In tracking aircraft "ownership," the author used the variable "operator." That is, because aircraft are financed in many ways, aircraft "operators" were considered aircraft "owners." The price data contain transaction prices for new and used aircraft sales. These data span the period from 1978 through 1993, are in nominal terms, and were obtained in an Excel file and required minimal processing. Loren K. Smith
