Norman Offstein, "An Extortionary Guerrilla Movement", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 22, No.6, 2007, pp. 995-1011. The data on pipeline attacks, oil production and other variables related to the guerrilla behavior were created from data provided the Colombian oil company Ecopetrol. The oil price information was collected online from the United States Department of Energy website. The data span from January 1986 to December 1997. All data files are contained in the zip file guerrdat.zip. Text files are ASCII files in DOS format. With the variables, all of the tables and results in the paper can be reproduced. File: atkdata.txt This file contains three variables, source Ecopetrol Number = numbered attack sequence, 1 to 498 Date = date of the attack Spill = spill size in barrels, where zero indicates the attack did not spill File: oilprod.txt This file contains monthly oil production information for wells on the Caño-Limón oil field from January 1986 to December 1997. Quantity in barrels. File: estdata.txt This file contains the variable names and definitions of 144 monthly observations from January 1986 -- December 1997 nomwop = nominal monthly oil price (from USDOE) wop = real monthly oil price in 1982 US dollars rep = guerrilla reputation, as defined in the paper totatk = total monthly pipeline attacks binatk = binomial pipeline attack decision, 0 = no attack, 1 = attack ocpay = oil company pay decision vector, 0 = not pay extortion demand, 1 = pay File: allvarsdata.xls This file contains all of the variables of the above three files, but in one file. This may easier for those interested in manipulating the date format of the attack information.
