The data are taken from the Consumer Expenditure Survey drawn in 1981 by Statistics Netherlands. However, Statistics Netherlands does not allow us to provide the data to others. Anyone interested in the data should therefore contact Statistics Netherlands, address: Statistics Netherlands Division Socio-Economic Statistics P.O. The data stem from the Consumer Expenditure Survey drawn in 1981. We selected a subsample consisting of the families with at least two adults. Due to missing observations and coding errors some families had to be eliminated from the dataset. We ended up with 1815 families The endogenous variable used is vacation expenditure, defined as expenditure of any member of the family on a vacation, with vacation defined as a "stay away from home for recreation purposes for at least four successive nights". The exogenous variables used are (notation taken from paper): x2= natural logarithm of total family expenditure in 1981 (in Dfl). x3= natural logarithm of family size (family size ranging from 2 to 7). x4= age class family head: 1: less than 20 years old; 2: 20-24; 3: 25-29; and so on, until 13: more than 74 years old. x5= education level (values ranging from 1 (low) to 5 (high)). x6= degree of urbanization (values ranging from 1 (country village) to 6 (big city)). Sample statistics are given in the paper.
