These are both ASCII files in DOS format. They are zipped in the file
mss-data.zip. The readme file explains the variable definitions and country
codes that are to be found in data sets

In the appendix of the paper there are descriptions of data sources and
details of how the data are used. 

The variables contained in datajae.txt are:

  CODE=country code
  YEAR=year
  HIGH=dummy variable equals 1 if country is high income
  MIDDLE=dummy variable equals 1 if country is middle income
  LATIN=dummy variable equals 1 if country is in Latin America
  MENA=dummy variable equals 1 if country is in Middle East and North Africa
  SSAFRICA=dummy variable equals 1 if country is in Sub Saharan Africa
  SASIA=dummy variable equals 1 if country is in South Asia
  SEASIA=dummy variable equals 1 if country is in South East Asia
  H=human capital stock
  L=number of workers
  Y=output
  K=physical capital stock
  SLADJ=adjusted output share of labor
  SHAREHK=share of human capital in adjusted output share of labor
  INV=investment
  PY=GDP deflator (from World Bank, World Tables)
  PINV=Investment deflator (from World Bank, World Tables)
  PPP=Purchasing Power Parity relative to the US (Summers-Heston)
  XR=nominal exchange rate (units of domestic currency per one US dollar)

There are 918 observations (51 countries times 18 years).

The variables contained in supdatajae.txt are:

  POLITICAL=index of political freedom
  CIVIL=index of civil freedom
  OPEN=dummy variable equals 1 if country's trade regime is classified as open
  
There are 868 observations (51 countries times 17 years).
