Marc Henry and Ismael Mourifié, "Euclidean Revealed Preferences: Testing the Spatial Testing Voting Model", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 28, No. 4, 2013, pp. 650-666. The data used in this paper were taken from the two following datasets: The first source is the American National Studies (ANES). ANES is available on-line at http://www.electionstudies.org/ . For discussion of potential limitations of the survey data in the ANES, see Anderson and Silver (1986). Also see a new technical report on "How to Analyze ANES Survey Data", by Matthew DeBell on-line at http://www.electionstudies.org/resources/papers/nes012492.pdf. The ANES represents the best and most widely used source of individual-level data on electoral participation and voting in U.S., which for each election year contains the individual voting decisions in presidential, senate and house races. It also gives the residence district of each voter and the name of each candidate in each election. The second source is the Poole and Rosenthal NOMINATE common space scores. These data are available on-line at http://www.voteview.com/ . For a discussion of potential limitations of Poole and Rosenthal's methodology, see Heckman and Snyder (1997). Poole and Rosenthal developed a methodology to estimate the positions of all politicians who ever served as president, senator, or house representative, in common two-ideological space. The analysis of this paper used data from 2000, 2004, and 2008. The data that we use are the result of a matching between these two datasets. The procedure for this matching is explained in the paper. See also Degan and Merlo (2009). The database is composed of 3 different files, position00.txt, position04.txt, and position08.txt. File 1: Position00 year 2000 number of columns 13 number of lines 602 column 1: position of democrat president on conservatism economic axis column 2: position of democrat president on social issue axis column 3: position of republican president on conservatism economic axis column 4: position of republican president on social issue axis column 5: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 6: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 7: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 8: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 9: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 10: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 11: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 12: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 13: voting profile of individual i For column 13, 1= DDD i.e this individual elects a democrat candidate at each of 3 elections 2=DDR 3=DRD 4=DRR 5=RDD 6=RDR 7=RRD 8=RRR File 2: Position04 year 2004 number of columns 13 number of lines 433 column 1: position of democrat president on conservatism economic axis column 2: position of democrat president on social issue axis column 3: position of republican president on conservatism economic axis column 4: position of republican president on social issue axis column 5: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 6: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 7: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 8: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 9: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 10: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 11: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 12: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 13: voting profile of individual i For column 13 1= DDD i.e this individual elects a democrat candidate at each of 3 elections 2=DDR 3=DRD 4=DRR 5=RDD 6=RDR 7=RRD 8=RRR File 3: Position08 year 2008 number of columns 13 number of lines 514 column 1: position of democrat president on conservatism economic axis column 2: position of democrat president on social issue axis column 3: position of republican president on conservatism economic axis column 4: position of republican president on social issue axis column 5: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 6: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 7: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 8: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 9: position of democrat senator on conservatism economic axis column 10: position of democrat senator on social issue axis column 11: position of republican senator on conservatism economic axis column 12: position of republican senator on social issue axis column 13: voting profile of individual i For column 13 1= DDD i.e this individual elects a democrat candidate at each of 3 elections 2=DDR 3=DRD 4=DRR 5=RDD 6=RDR 7=RRD 8=RRR The three data files are all ASCII files in DOS format. They are zipped in the file hm-data.zip. Unix/Linux users should use "unzip -a".
