Robert Gagne and Carmine Nappi, "The Cost and Technological Structure of Aluminum Smelters Worldwide", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 15, No. 4, 2000, pp. 417-432. The 1994 smelter cost profiles data set was provided under a strict confidentiality agreement by CRU International Ltd., a London based firm. In order to disclose this data set to any other researcher, a written permission must be obtained from CRU. Interested researchers may send their request to Robert Gagne (by either snailmail, email or fax) who will in turn contact the CRU to obtain the desired permission. He can be contacted at: Robert Gagne Institut d'economie appliquee Ecole des HEC 3000, Chemin de la Cote-Sainte-Catherine Montreal (Quebec) Canada H3T 2A7 Phone: (514) 340-6435 Fax: (514) 340-6469 Email: robert.gagne@hec.ca Alternatively, you can contact CRU directly to obtain the permission and then contact Robert Gagne to get a copy of the file. The CRU contact is: John Martin Director of Aluminum CRU International Ltd. 31 Mount Pleasant London WC1X 0AD UK Phone: 0171-278-0414 Fax: 0171-837-0976 The data set used for the analysis includes 135 observations. It is stored in an ASCII (text) file which is small enough to be sent by email. The data is in free format (variables are delimited by blanks). The first variable is a smelter id (5 digit code). The first digit of the smelter id is a region code: (1) North America, (2) South America, (3) Western Europe, (4) Eastern Europe, (5) Asia (except China), (6) Former USSR, (7) Africa, (8) Oceania, (9) China. The other variables follow the smelter id on the same line. Variables are appearing in the same order as they appear in Table 1 of the paper.
