H. Salehi Esfahani, K. Mohaddes, and M. Hashem Pesaran, "An Empirical Growth Model for Major Oil Exporters", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 29, No. 1, 2014, pp. 1-21. Our dataset contains quarterly data from 1979Q2 to 2006Q4 for Iran and 1979Q2 to 2009Q4 for eight countries: Indonesia, Kuwait, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. Variables --------- The following variables are included in the dataset for each country: y is the log of domestic real output ep is the logarithm of the real exchange rate (number of domestic currency per one US dollar) ys is the log of foreign real output poil is the log of the nominal price of oil per barrel in US dollars xoil is the log of domestic oil exports in thousands of barrels per day Datasets -------- The file emp-data.zip contains nine ASCII text files in DOS format. Unix/Linux users should use "unzip -a". Each file contains the data for an individual country and is labelled by the country name. The nine files are therefore Indonesia.txt Iran.txt Kuwait.txt Libya.txt Mexico.txt Nigeria.txt Norway.txt Saudi_Arabia.txt Venezuela.txt Data Sources for Iran: Data for Iran are from H. Salehi Esfahani, K. Mohaddes, and M. Hashem Pesaran, "Oil Exports and the Iranian Economy", CESifo Working Paper Version: No. 2843: http://www.econ.cam.ac.uk/teach/mohaddes/Iran_VARX_Data.zip Data Sources for the Other Eight Countries GDP (y), exchange rate (e), and CPI (p) data are from the IMF International Financial Statistics database: http://www.imf.org/external/data.htm Oil export (xoil) data were obtained from OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin: http://www.opec.org/opec_web/en/publications/202.htm Nominal price of oil (poil) data were obtained from the GVAR Toolbox dataset: http://www-cfap.jbs.cam.ac.uk/research/gvartoolbox/download.html Foreign output data (ys) were calculated using equation (27) in the paper. The trade weights are computed based on data from the IMF Direction of Trade Statistics database: http://www.imf.org/external/data.htm Data on the foreign variables were obtained from P. Cashin, K. Mohaddes, and M. Raissi, "A Global VAR Model of MENA Business Cycles". These data can be obtained from the authors directly. Replication You can replicate the statistics and results using the above datasets in Microfit 5.01 and by using the list and equation files from: http://www.econ.cam.ac.uk/teach/mohaddes/EMP_Data.zip
