Jesus Carro and Pedro Mira, "A dynamic model of contraceptive choice of Spanish couples", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 21, No. 7, 2006, pp. 955-980. Data used in the estimation of the structural model presented in the paper are in the ASCII file carro-mira.txt, which is zipped in carro-mira.zip. Since this ASCII file is in DOS format, Unix users should use "unzip -a". Details about the source of the data are given in the paper. Each row corresponds with a couple-year observation. Therefore, the file contains 21254 lines. There are twenty-nine columns in the data file, containing the following variables: 1.- Husband's education, coded as described in the paper 2.- Wife's education, coded as described in the paper 3.- Wife's age at the moment of marriage 4.- Couple's Number 5.- Year 6.- wife's age 7.- Husband's age 8.- Current birth indicator 9.- Next period birth indicator 10.- Number of children 11.- Current contraceptive action: takes value 1 if not contracepting, 2 if contracepting and 3 if sterilizing. 12.- Previous period birth indicator 13.- Religious couple indicator Columns 14th to 16th together give the same information as column 11: 14.- Not contracepting indicator (1 if not contracepting, 0 otherwise) 15.- Contracepting indicator (1 if contracepting, 0 otherwise) 16.- Sterilizing indicator (1 if sterilizing, 0 otherwise) Columns 17th to 24th contain the age of the first, second,... child. No couple in the sample has more than 8 children. These variables take value -1 ifthat couple in t that year does not have such number of children. For example, an observation with only two children will have the age of the first child on column 17th, the age of the second child in column 18th and value -1 in columns 19th to 24th. 25.- Previous contraceptive action.
