Jon. A. Breslaw and J. Barry Smith, "A Simple and Efficient Method for Estimating the Magnitude and Precision of Welfare Changes", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 10, No. 3, 1995, pp. 313-337. There are two files associated with this article. The first, called WELFARE.PRG replicates the GAUSS program shown in Table A1. This is the program that has been used in this article; it calculates the compensating variation and standard error for whatever demand function that is specified. In the case of Table A1, this is the McKenzie Pearce example shown in Table 2. The second program, VARTIA.PRG, replicates Table A2. Both programs run under most versions of GAUSS, as is. Copy the program to some directory eg c:\WELFARE, then from the GAUSS prompt type RUN c:\welfare\welfare.prg in the normal way. For info or problems, contact J. Breslaw at breslaw@vax2.concordia.ca
