Olivier Donni and Eleonora Matteazzi, "Collective Decisions, Household Production, and the Labor Force Participation", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 33, No. 7, 2018, pp. 1064-1080. The empirical analysis is based on the 2009 wave of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. A subsample of married (ER42023 = 1 in the PSID code book) couples, aged between 25 and 60, where men are working and women are working or not is selected. Only stable couples are included, i.e., if ER46984 = 1 or ER46984 = 2; All the data that we used are in the file psid3_jae.csv, which is an ASCII file in DOS format. It is zipped in dm-data.zip. Unix/Linux users should use "unzip -a". The sample size reduces to 2,099 households. The file psid3_jae.csv contains all the variables (26) used in the empirical analysis: HHID : household identifier (obtained from ER42002) AGE_M : man's age in years (divided by 10) (from ER42017) AGE_F : woman's age in years (divided by 10) (from ER42019) NOT_WHITE_M : man's nonwhite dummy (from ER46543) NOT_WHITE_F : woman's nonwhite dummy (from ER46449) HISP_M : man's hispanic dummy (from ER46543) HISP_F : woman's hispanic dummy (from ER46449) YEARS_EDUC_M : education in years (from ER46981) YEARS_EDUC_F : education in years (from ER46982) REGION2 : region of residence NORTH CENTRAL dummy (from ER46974) REGION3 : region of residence SOUTH dummy (from ER46974) REGION4 : region of residence WEST dummy (from ER46974) TD_M : man's yearly domestic working hours (divided by 1000) (from ER42646 multiplied by 52) TD_F : woman's yearly domestic working hours (divided by 1000) (from ER42644 multiplied by 52) NCHILD0_6 : number of children between 0 and 6 (from ER42020 and the cross-year individual file) sex_ratio : for each State, and for each category of age, as the number of men divided by the total number of men and women (from the Census Survey of Population and Housing 2010) NCHILD7_18 : number of children between 7 and 18 (from ER42020 and the cross-year individual file) LM_M : man's yearly market working hours (divided by 1000) (from ER46767) LM_F : woman's yearly market working hours (divided by 1000) (from ER46788) lnwm_1hat : fitted value of the log man's wage equation lnwf_1hat : fitted value of the log woman's wage equation std_lnwm_1res : standard error of the errors of the log man's wage equation std_lnwf_1res : standard error of the errors of the log woman's wage equation corrwfwm : correlation coefficient of the errors of the log wage equations netexp2_HAT : net expenditure (i.e. total expenditure minus labor earnings) (computed from the US Expenditure Survey of 2008) TL_F : LM_F + TD_F TL_M : LM_M + TD_M
