Kristin J. Kleinjans and Arthur van Soest, "Rounding, Focal Point Answers and Nonresponse to Subjective Probability Questions", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 29, No. 4, 2014, pp. 567-585. The data for this paper come from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). In order to access Health and Retirement Study public release data, you must first register and obtain a username and password. This username/password combination must be used whenever you wish to download data files. We present below the files that are needed to get the data for our paper, which variables to use to merge the files, and which variables are used in our empirical analyses. 1. How to register to get access to the HRS data: Researchers can register at: http://hrsonline.isr.umich.edu/index.php?p=reg . 2. Which files to download: We used the following RAND-generated files: - RAND HRS Data File, version L - RAND-generated enhanced fat files for years 2002-2010: For 2002: h02f2c.sta For 2004: h06f2b.dta For 2006: h06f2b.dta For 2008: h08f1b.dta For 2010: h10e1a.dta These files are part of one zip file that can be downloaded from the Data Downloads page under RAND HRS Data File (v.L). The files are merged using the variable "hhidpn". 3. Sample selection: We use the original HRS cohort and the war babies cohort and their spouses, and restrict the sample to individuals age 50 and higher. We drop individuals with missing education or race, and set answers from proxy respondents to the subjective probability questions to missing. 4. Which variables to use: "x" refers to the wave number. Subjective probability questions rxliv75: expectations to live to 75 or more rxork62: expectations of working fulltime after reaching age 62 rxworklm: expectations if health limiting work during the next 10 years rxbeq10k: expectations of leaving a bequest of $10,000 or more rxinher: expectations of receiving an inheritance hp047 jp047 kp047 lp047 mp047: Stock market expectations Right-hand side variables and variables used for sample selection rxproxy: whether proxy respondent rxagey_e: age raeduc: educational level raracem: race rahisp: whether hispanic ragender: gender hxchild: number of children rxshlt: self-reported health status rxfinr: financial respondent rxmstat: marital status rxlivpar: parents alive rxwork: working for pay rxjphys, rxjlift, and rxjstoop: Physical effort required at current job rxjstres: Stress in current job hxitot: income hxatota: wealth rxhigov, rxcovr, rxhiothp: covered by health insurance r1imrc20, r2himr20, rximrc, rxfimrc, md182m1: cognition Income and wealth are adjusted for inflation using the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI with base July 2010, urban, not seasonally adjusted.
