The data used in the paper were obtained from the first seven wave of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). The file ef-data.txt contains 1026 observations, each of which takes 3 lines. These correspond to the Full Sample. The variables are defined as follows: Column 1: PID - cross-wave person identifier Column 2: WAVE - BHPS interview year (1=1991, ..., 7=1997) Column 3: DOBY - year of birth of the young adult Column 4: SEX - gender of young adult (1=male; 2=female) Column 5: EDUCATION - young adult's highest educational achievement (1=no qualification; 2=other lower qualification; 3=O level/GCSE or equivalent; 4=A level; 5=other higher qualification; 6=university or more) Column 6: ENIF06 - ever in a non-intact family between birth and age 6 (0/1 dummy) Column 7: W06_M - number of years mother worked between the birth of the child and the child's sixth birthday Column 8: WF06_M - number of years mother worked full time between the birth of the child and the child's sixth birthday Column 9: WP06_M - number of years mother worked part time between the birth of the child and the child's sixth birthday Column 10: SISTERS - number of sisters in the household Column 11: BROTHERS - number of brothers in the household Column 12: FIRSTBORN - whether firstborn (=1) or not (=0) Column 13: MAPID - mother's personal identifier Column 14: AGEB_M - mother's age at first birth (years/continuous) Column 15: MAEDUC - mother's highest educational achievement (1=no qualification; 2=other lower qualification; 3=O level/GCSE or equivalent; 4=A level; 5=other higher qualification; 6=university or more) Column 16: AGEB_F - father's age at first birth (years/continuous) Column 17: FAEDUC - father's highest educational achievement (1=no qualification; 2=other lower qualification; 3=O level/GCSE or equivalent; 4=A level; 5=other higher qualification; 6=university or more) Column 18: W06_F - number of years father worked between the birth of the child and the child's sixth birthday Column 19: MS_DAD - indicator for missing father in the data Column 20: MS_WRKF - indicator for missing father's work information in the data Column 21: URATE - female unemployment rate by year and region when child was ages 0-5 (constructed using various years of the Labour Force Surveys) Note: The missing values for AGEB_F and FAEDUC are recorded as "." The file ef-data.txt is an ASCII file in DOS format. It is zipped in the file ef-data.zip. Unix/Linux users should use "unzip -a".
