Pierre-Carl Michaud and Konstantinos Tatsiramos, "Fertility and Female Employment Dynamics in Europe: The Effect of Using Alternative Econometric Modeling Assumptions", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 26, No. 4, 2011, pp. 641-668. The data used in this article are from the European Community Household Panel Survey (ECHP) 1994-2001, published by Eurostat. Due to the confidential character of the ECHP microdata, direct access to the anonymised data is only provided by means of research contracts, which does not allow any of the data to be distributed to third parties. The variables used in our study and sample selection rules are described here: The data consist of married or cohabiting females in ages 20-45 at the first observed wave. We restrict the analysis to females who enter the panel within the first 3 waves (1994-1996), and we consider those with continuous spells since the first observed wave. The panel is therefore unbalanced. Students and those retired are excluded. The definitions of the variables can be found in the codebook of the survey. Variables starting with P are found in the personal files (pfile), variables starting with H are found in the household file (hfile), and variables starting with R are found in the relation file (rfile). To determine the number, age, and gender of the children for each female we used the following variables from the relationship file RD003: age of child RD004: gender of child The variable "relation" is used to determine the children in the household. Relation: Relationship between persons in the household Socio Demographic Variables: PD003: Age PDOO4: Gender PH001: Health status PD005: Marital status PT022: Education level Household Variables: HD001: Household size HD002: Number of adult above 18 in the household HD001-HD002: Number of children below 18 in the household Birth: Nubmer of kids [t] - Nubmer of kids [t-1] PI1111: Income from wage PI112: Income from self-employment PI1111 + PI112: Used to construct husband income Permament husband income: Mean value over the waves Transitory husbant income: Deviations of each year's income from the mean HI121: Property income HI122: Capital income HI121+HI122: Household wealth Permament household income: Mean value over the waves Transitory household income: Deviations of each year's income from the mean HG015: Region of residence Labor Market Variables: PE002: Main activity status PE005: Weekly hours of work Employed (15+ Hours): PE002 = 1 Employed (30+ Hours): PE002 = 1 and PE005>= 30 Please address any questions to: Konstantinos Tatsiramos IZA Schaumburg-Lippe Str. 5/9 53113 Bonn, Germany tatsiramos [AT] iza.org
