Peter Egger, Michael Pfaffermayer, and Andrea Weber, "Sectoral Adjustment of Employment to Shifts in Outsourcing and Trade: Evidence from a Dynamic Fixed Effects Multinomial Logit Model", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 22, No. 3, 2007, pp. 559-580. The data and program files, which are ASCII files in DOS format, are zipped in the file epw-files.zip. This file describes the dataset "gausm.raw" used for estimating the main models of the paper. GAUSS estimation routines for different model specifications are provided in the files "crxkern.g" and "crxkerntab8.g". (See the comments in the GAUSS files for further information.) The ASCÍI data in "gausm.raw" can be transformed into a GAUSS data format by using the ATOG routine. This is the format used to read in data in "crxkern.g" and "crxkerntab8.g". DATA DESCRIPTION The dataset contains observations of 32,703 individuals. For each individual, there are 579 entries defining different variables. Values of the variables for different years are stored next to each other. The first 579 entries in the data correspond to individual 1, the next to individual 2, etc. The the dependent variable y is a categorical variable, taking 6 different labor market states: state=0 out of labor force state=1 unemployed state=2 employment in CDA manufacturing sector state=3 employment in CA manufacturing sector state=4 employment in sales sector state=5 emplyoment in service sector The data contain three different specifications of the dependent variable, y, ya, yb, according to the measure of comparative advantage. The variable used in the main results is yb. The following is a list of variables in the order they appear in the ASCII file gausm.raw. DEPENDENT VARIABLE 13 entries per variable corresponding to years 1989 - 2001 y relative comparative advantage in 1989 ya years 1989 - 2001 trade balance: postive trade balance in all years yb years 1989 - 2001 RCA TEST: comparative advantage in all years EXPLANATORY VARIABLES state dependent explanatory variables 12 entries per variable corresponding to years 1990-2001 rm1 import growth rate in state 1 rm2 import growth rate in state 2 rm3 import growth rate in state 3 rm4 import growth rate in state 4 rm5 import growth rate in state 5 rx1 export growth rate in state 1 rx2 export growth rate in state 2 rx3 export growth rate in state 3 rx4 export growth rate in state 4 rx5 export growth rate in state 5 ter1 trade weighted xchange rate in state 1 ter2 trade weighted xchange rate in state 2 ter3 trade weighted xchange rate in state 3 ter4 trade weighted xchange rate in state 4 ter5 trade weighted xchange rate in state 5 ier1 import weighted xchange rate in state 1 ier2 import weighted xchange rate in state 2 ier3 import weighted xchange rate in state 3 ier4 import weighted xchange rate in state 4 ier5 import weighted xchange rate in state 5 xer1 export weighted exchange rate in state 1 xer2 export weighted exchange rate in state 2 xer3 export weighted exchange rate in state 3 xer4 export weighted exchange rate in state 4 xer5 export weighted exchange rate in state 5 outsc1 outsourcing measure in state 1 outsc2 outsourcing measure in state 2 outsc3 outsourcing measure in state 3 outsc4 outsourcing measure in state 4 outsc5 outsourcing measure in state 5 varb1 productivity in state 1 varb2 productivity in state 2 varb3 productivity in state 3 varb4 productivity in state 4 varb5 productivity in state 5 yst1 expected wages in state 1 yst2 expected wages in state 2 yst3 expected wages in state 3 yst4 expected wages in state 4 yst5 expected wages in state 5 explanatrory variables independent of the state 12 entries per variable corresponding to years 1990-2001 gdp gdp growth xc age category less than 25 years xd age category 25 to 29 years xe age category 30 to 35 years sx indicator for not yet in the labor force
