The data are in two ASCII files in DOS format, gdp.txt and pop.txt. Columns are separated by tabs and are of variable width. These two files are zipped in the file pz-data.zip. Unix users should use "unzip -a". Brief description of the data: The data set is based on the database of CRENOS, Center for North South Economic research, (www.crenos.unica.it). Variables are: (1) Annual per capita GDP at 1990 constant prices converted to Purchasing Power Standards (PPS); (2) Total population/1000 (annual average), for 110 Nomenclature of the Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions. Different digits of the NUTS classification have been selected for each country. The territorial units selected are the following 110 units: NUTS-0 (countries) for Denmark, Luxemburg and Ireland; NUTS-1 for Belgium (3 Regions), Germany (11 Lander), Netherland (4 Landsdelen) and United Kingdom (9 Government Office Regions and 3 Countries); NUTS-2 for Italy (20 Regioni), France (22 Regions), Spain (17 Comunitated Autonomas), Portugal (5 Comissaoes de coordenacao regional), Greece (13 Development Regions).
