Jonathan L. Willis, "Magazine Prices Revisited", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 21, No. 3, 2006, pp. 337-344. All data are in the file magprices.txt, which is an ASCII file in DOS format. It is zipped in the file jw-data.zip. Unix users should use "unzip -a". The data in magprices.txt are arranged as a stacked panel dataset of magazine prices and the relevant explanatory variables. Note: This dataset includes the full set of observed magazine prices. The econometric analysis was conducted on a subset of observations: magazine prices between 1953-79. Column 10 represents a dummy variable equal to 1 if the observation was used in the analysis. An entry of NaN is used simply as a placeholder (useful in Matlab syntax) -- data is not needed in these positions for the empirics. The eleven variables (columns) are 1) year 2) magazine indicator (the 38 magazines are listed) 3) price of the magazine for the January issue of the corresponding year NOTE: pricing data was provided by Stephen Cecchetti; price data for a magazine begins on a date in which a price change was observed; in the empirical analysis, data prior to 1953 are excluded 4) dummy variable indicating if the price changed between January of the current year and January of the following year 5) number of years since the previous price change 6) Price index: GDP deflator index for gross domestic non-farm produce, excluding housing services (Source: Dept. of Commerce) 7) cumulative change in inflation since the previous price change 8) single copy sales of magazines for magazine industry (Source: Magazine Publishers Association) 9) cumulative change in magazine industry sales since previous price change 10) dummy variable indicating if the observation was included in the econometric analysis NOTE: data from the period 1953-1979 are used for the analysis: 27 years for 38 magazines 11) group id numbers corresponding to the groups used in the Chamberlain conditional logit estimation Magazines: (this list can also be found in the appendix of Cecchetti (Journal of Econometrics 1986)) 1 = Antiques 2 = Architectural Review 3 = Atlantic 4 = Audio 5 = Better Homes and Gardens 6 = Business Week 7 = Commentary 8 = Consumer Reports 9 = Current History 10 = Ebony 11 = Esquire 12 = Films in Review 13 = Foreign Affairs 14 = Good Housekeeping 15 = Harper's Bazaar 16 = Harper's Magazine 17 = High Fidelity 18 = House and Garden 19 = House Beautiful 20 = Interiors 21 = Modern Photography 22 = Motor Trend 23 = Nation 24 = The New Leader 25 = The New Republic 26 = New Yorker 27 = Newsweek 28 = Parents' 29 = Popular Mechanics 30 = Popular Science 31 = Road and Track 32 = Science Digest 33 = Scientific American 34 = Sunset 35 = Time 36 = U.S. News and World Report 37 = Vogue 38 = Yachting
