Guy Laroque and Bernard Salanié, "Labor Market Institutions and Employment in France", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 27, No. 1, 2002, pp. 25-28. All data are in the file emploi.data, which is zipped in the file ls-data.zip. The data file is an ASCII file in DOS format. Unix users should unzip it with "unzip -a". The data come from the Enquête Emploi, March 1997, available on CDROM from INSEE. We provide the basic data set used in the estimation after selection of the estimation sample. The file emploi.data contains one observation per line. There are 10,889 observations. The variables are in columns. The two first columns are 8 characters wide, with one digit after the decimal point. The next column is an integer 4 characters wide. The remaining eighteen variables are integers, each coded as 3 characters. The variables, together with a brief description of their meanings, are listed below in column order (their names often come from their designation in the Enquête Emploi). w monthly net wage of the woman, francs wcj monthly net wage of her companion, francs extri sample weight hh hours worked during the week, hours agd age, years ee 1 if employed, 0 if not employed adfe age when leaving school, years expe work experience = agd-adfe, years dip1 1 if at least graduate, 0 otherwise dip3 1 if undergraduate at end of studies, 0 otherwise dip4 1 if attained end of high school at end of studies, 0 otherwise dip5 1 if basic technical training, 0 otherwise dip6 1 if junior high school at end of studies, 0 otherwise nodip 1 if no diploma, 0 otherwise nenf number of children aged 18 or less at home enf3 number of children aged 2 or less enf6 number of children between 3 and 6, 6 excluded en18 number of children between 6 and 18, 18 excluded so housing status: 1 owner with a mortgage, 2 owner no mortgage, 3 tenant social housing, 4 tenant private sector, 5 tenant furnished housing or hotel room, 6 free housing. chbit 1 unemployed ILO convention, 0 otherwise eecj 1 if wcj is larger than 10 francs.
