Charles J. Romeo, "Conducting Inference in Semiparametric Duration Models under Inequality Restrictions on the Shape of the Hazard Implied by Job Search Theory", Journal of Applied Econometrics, Vol. 14, No. 6, 1999, pp. 587-605. The data are in the DOS-format file romeo.data, which is zipped in romeo.zip. Data arrangement: The data are arranged in a 452x15 matrix. Each row of the matrix represents a data record. There are 15 variables in each record, and 452 records in the data set. Dataset size = 35KB (in DOS format) Variable definitions by column. 1. Duration of first spell of unemployment, t, in weeks. 2. Heaping variable, h(t): h(t) = 1 if t = 2,4,6,8 h(t) = 2 if t = 12,16,22,26,30,35,39,43 h(t) = 3 if t = 48 h(t) = 10 if t = 52 h(t) = 0 otherwise. 3. Spell = 1 if spell is complete. 4. RACE = 1 if white. 5. SEX = 1 if female. Reason for unemployment is separated into three dummy variables: 6. JLOSE = 1 if individual is a job loser who is on layoff, or is a job loser for any other reason; 7. JLEAVE = 1 if individual is a job leaver; 8. REENTR = 1 if individual is a labor force reentrant; All these dummy variables equal 0 if the individual is a new entrant to the labor force. Search methods: In the CCO there are 9 possible active search methods. Individuals who are not working and not on layoff, have to be using at least one of these methods to search for work to be classified as looking unemployed. Using these data, we create a search variable as follows: 9. SEARCH = 1 if (1) the unemployment spell is completed between the first and second surveys and number of methods used to search > average number of methods used across all records in the sample, or, (2) for individuals who remain unemployed for consecutive surveys, if the number of methods used is strictly nondecreasing at all survey points, and is strictly increasing at least at one survey point. 10. PUBEMP = 1 if an individual used a public employment agency to search for work at any survey points relating to the individuals first unemployment spell. 11-14. FTPT(s) = 1 if an individual is searching for full time work at survey s, s = 1,2,3,4. 15.NOBS = number of observations on the first spell of unemployment for the record, NOBS = 1,2,3,4.
